My Journey with a Standardbred
By Karen Douglass
In this, her third book, Karen Douglass
turns from poetry to memoir. Here she chronicles her introduction
to the world of horses, especially the Standardbred, known to
many only as the harness racing horse, both trotter & pacer.
Paperback, first edition, 151 pages, size 6" x 9",
retail price $ 22.95, copyright 2004.
An inspirational window on the world of human-horse relationships!
Douglass shares her lifelong interest in horses and offers a
shining example that at any age, you can make your dreams come
true. The imaginary horse of her youth leads the author to the
world of harness racing and she shares much about the giving
and therapeutic nature of Standardbreds.
Let her and her beloved Casco inspire you to write a new chapter
in your own life.
Douglass holds an MFA in Creative Writing and has been a columnist,
poet, teacher, mother and nurse.
Her previous books include Red Goddess Poems and Bones in the
Chimney.
A portion of the proceeds from every
sale of this book goes to the
Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization of Maine.

The Essential Guide
to Carriage Driving
Robyn Cuffey and Jaye-Allison
Winkel
Seeing
the need for a truly practical guide to carriage driving, the
authors combined their over thirty years' of driving experience
in the writing of The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving. Generously
illustrated with over 350 photographs and diagrams and covering
topics ranging from the selection and fitting of harness and
vehicle to preparing for competition and driving multiples, this
book is sure to become an indispensable resource.
Robyn Cuffey is an international clinician
specializing in retraining Standardbred horses. She is co-author
of Retraining the Harness Racehorse. Cuffey began carriage driving
twenty years ago and in this time she has driven for recreation
and for competition in combined driving, pleasure showing and
competitive driving. She has trained and driven horses and ponies
for single driving and pairs. Knowing that too many people are
lucky to "survive" their first carriage driving experiences
with ill-fitting and marginally safe equipment and inappropriate
horses and vehicles, helping others get a safe start in carriage
driving is a primary goal for Cuffey. As an instructor and trainer
at her Buxton, Maine farm, Cuffey fields questions about carriage
driving almost daily.
This book was written in response to this interest from students
and fellow horse owners.
Jaye-Allison Winkel is the listowner
of "CD-L, the Carriage Driving List", an Internet discussion
group dedicated to the subject of carriage driving, since its
inception in 1996. She is also the publisher of CarriageDriving.net,
a carriage driving "webzine" on the World Wide Web.
An avid horsewoman, she learned to drive ten years ago and the
sport has been her passion since that time. Winkel lives in Hollis
Center, Maine, with her husband and four young sons.

Retraining the Harness Racehorse
written
by Mary Anne Donovan-Wright & Robyn Cuffey
The first resource
of its kind
Geared toward
the novice horse trainer, it also contains step-by-step information
on re-muscling and retraining the Standardbred for pleasure riding
and driving, training for the trail, selecting the proper training
equipment, the history of the Standardbred and more.
Even though the
information is targeted to Standardbreds, the book is written
in such an understandable and friendly manner that it can be
used as a guide for anyone to use in training any breed.
Cuffey, a professional
trainer from Gorham, Maine, has worked with Standardbreds for
nearly twenty years, and in that time, has trained hundreds of
horses. She is president of the national Standardbred Pleasure
Horse Organization, and is acknowledged as the leading expert
on retraining former Standardbred harness racing horses in the
nation.
Donovan-Wright
is a professional writer and breed devotee who has owned and
trained three Standardbreds. She competes in open shows and plans
to train her newest Standardbred mare to compete in eventing
competitions.
In addition to
specific training instructions, the book also contains stories
from people throughout the country who have trained and successfully
competed with their Standardbred.
The book can be ordered for $21.95 plus $3.00
